چکیده

A study of Sophie Germain’s extensive manuscripts on Fermat’s Last Theorem calls for a reassessment of her work in number theory. There is much in these manuscripts beyond the single theorem for Case 1 for which she is known from a published footnote by Legendre. Germain had a fully-fledged, highly developed, sophisticated plan of attack on Fermat’s Last Theorem. The supporting algorithms she invented for this plan are based on theoretical concepts, ideas and “Here is what I have found:” We owe heartfelt thanks to many people who have helped us tremendously with this project over a long fifteen years: Hélène Barcelo, Louis Bucciarelli, Keith Dennis, Mai Gehrke, Tiziana Giorgi, Catherine Goldstein, Maria Christina Mariani, Pat Penfield, Donato Pineider, and Ed Sandifer, along with Marta Gori of the Biblioteca Moreniana, as well as the Bibliothèque Nationale, New York Public Library, Niedersächsische Staatsund Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, and the Interlibrary Loan staff of New Mexico State University. Dedicated to the memory of my parents, Daphne and Ted Pengelley, for inspiring my interest in history, and to Pat Penfield, for her talented, dedicated, and invaluable editorial help, love and enthusiasm, and support for this project.

Sophie ’ s Diary

Can a …ctional teenage diary of the mathematician Sophie Germain have dramatic and captivating appeal to audiences ranging from curious teenagers to professional mathematicians? The answer lies in the delicate balance between what we do and don’t know about her real life, along with the extraordinary historical and mathematical circumstances that coalesced with her stranger-than-…ction initiati...

Fibonacci numbers and Fermat ’ s last theorem

numbers. As applications we obtain a new formula for the Fibonacci quotient Fp−( 5 p )/p and a criterion for the relation p |F(p−1)/4 (if p ≡ 1 (mod 4)), where p 6= 5 is an odd prime. We also prove that the affirmative answer to Wall’s question implies the first case of FLT (Fermat’s last theorem); from this it follows that the first case of FLT holds for those exponents which are (odd) Fibonac...

From the Taniyama - Shimura Conjecture to Fermat ’ s Last Theorem

My aim is to summarize the main ideas of [25] for a relatively wide audience and to communicate the structure of the proof to non-specialists. The discussion is inevitably technical at points, however, since a large amount of machinery from arithmetical algebraic geometry is required. The reader interested in a genuinely non-technical overview may prefer to begin with Mazur’s delightful introdu...

The power digraphs of safe primes

A power digraph, denoted by $G(n,k)$, is a directed graph with $Z_{n}={0,1,..., n-1}$ as the set of vertices and $L={(x,y):x^{k}equiv y~(bmod , n)}$ as the edge set, where $n$ and $k$ are any positive integers. In this paper, the structure of $G(2q+1,k)$, where $q$ is a Sophie Germain prime is investigated. The primality tests for the integers of the form $n=2q+1$ are established in terms of th...
